In domestic water, nitrate is monitored due to the health effects that it has on newborn babies. High level of nitrates can cause a condition known as methemoglobinemia or “blue-baby syndrome”. The WHO has set the maximum contaminant level of nitrate in water at 40 mg/L. This uses optical absorbance method for measuring nitrate up to 50.0 mg/L (ppm) in water from 0.0 to 50.0 mg/L.
